Calgary Stampede- 100th Anniversary

by Lavine Team on July 25, 2012

The City of Calgary at over a million people strong, continues to grow and attracts people to both visit & live here from all over the world.

There are many wonderful things about Calgary……….a thriving business center with the second most head offices in the country, a diverse multi-cultural society, vibrant inner city, beautiful skyline, endless pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, picturesque scenery with gorgeous parks, 2 rivers flowing through and the Rocky Mountains backdrop are just a few. Also the light rail transit ( LRT), post-secondary institutions, sports training facilities, professional sports teams and so much more….

The crown jewel of all the numerous festivals & events in Calgary is the Calgary Stampede. Nicknamed The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, it runs usually from the first Friday of July through the following weekend for 10 days of fun. The whole city gets into the spirit by dressing in western attire, neighborhood & business sponsored free pancake breakfasts, dressing store fronts with western decor while numerous functions and events happen not only at the Stampede Grounds but at venues throughout the city.

Started in 1912 by a group of 4 local businessmen in an effort to preserve the western heritage while promoting Alberta to the world, this year marked the 100th anniversary of this perennial favourite. The parade was spectacular as were the fireworks that lit up the night after each night’s grandstand show. The entertainment was superb with Garth Brooks, Paul Brandt, Brad Paisley, The Beach Boys and more. The flagship events namely the Rodeo and the Chuckwagon races, had lots of action as each event winner pocketed $100000+ in prize money.

It’s a world class event that makes the city proud of their heritage and proud of their city. We attended several events and took some video for us to remember and to share the good times…..hope you enjoy this video and the others that are on one of  our YouTube sites by clicking on the link below.
